I like listening to music while working out – it helps put me in the “zone.” The high tempo music I listen to removes the monotony that occasionally accompanies exercising. And it’s not just me – science has shown that listening to music during your workouts can help increase the effectiveness of your routines.
Finding a comfortable pair of earbuds or headphones for workouts can be a difficult task. When I first started exercising, all the earbuds or headphones I tried all caused pain, or just fell out as I was moving.
What I was looking for, in addition to comfort and fit, were headphones or earbuds that had noise cancelling features to block the sound of the wind as I was exercising. This was important for me, as I didn’t want to have to listen to music at loud volumes – damaging my hearing the process – just to cancel outside noise.
I’ve gone through several pairs, and have fortunately found a few different models of earbuds for exercise that I consider the best of the best. Take a look at the top earbuds for cycling and running, detailed below.
Take Your Pick: The Best Earphones for Biking and Running
On a Budget: The Best Cheap Exercise Earbuds – Sound2 XJ5
If you’re paying for gym fees or equipment rentals, you may be looking at a pair of headphones that are light on your wallet. The Sound2 XJ5 Sport Clip Earphones are exactly what you’re looking for. They have a MSRP of $15, but are regularly on sale for less than $10 on Amazon.
Don’t get fooled by that $10 price – these are quality headphones that provide better sound than stock iPhone headphones.
These headphones are designed for sports enthusiasts – the clip on the earbuds allows them to stay in your ear even during rigorous movement, in a way that’s comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.
Middle Ground: Sennheiser CX 685 Adidas Sports In-Ear Headphones
They’re higher priced than the Sound2 model discussed above, but are still considerably cheap, especially for the premium quality you’re getting. For example, my favorite thing about these headphones is that they’re built to stay comfortable during long runs or bike rides, and remain comfortable even when sweating.
These headphones fit comfortably and securely in your ears, with no pressure or pain. The secure fit means great noise reduction from outside sounds – but the noise isolating feature works so well that you should only keep one headphone in at a time when in an urban environment, for safety.
High End: Bose SIE2 Sport Headphones
If rain doesn’t deter you from running or biking, you need a weatherproof pair of headphones – which means skipping the cheaper options. The Bose SIE2 Sport Headphones represents the best pair of weather resistant sports headphones for biking and running at this price point. It’s the best balance of budget and quality.
These headphones also come with an arm band pouch, which is perfect for holding your exercise essentials: phone, mp3 player, keys, gym ID, and more.
Earbuds vs. Headphones For Running and Cycling: What’s Best for You?
Headphones or earbuds, which ones are better for use while exercising? Either option works, but based on my experience I find earbuds to be the better choice.
You can take one earbud out when needed, in case you want to hear outside noise for safety, or other reasons. The size also means you can remove them when needed and they won’t be cumbersome around your neck or in your pocket. Earbuds also provide a better option for noise cancelling features as they form a suction when in your ears, which blocks some outside noise – this is useful when you’re in the gym and want to use your earbuds to block out the loud music they may be playing.
How Safe Are Earbuds For Running And Cycling?
Earbuds are safe to use for running and cycling – and most other exercise related activities – but you need to keep some basics in mind. If you’re running or exercising outside, only keep one earbud in so your other ear is safe to hear sounds of vehicles and other potential dangers. Also, be sure to listen at a reasonable volume as to not cause any hearing loss or damage.
